Cleveland architect draws on community experience to serve RTA board

Cuyahoga County Commissioners Jan. 30 named Paul Volpe to Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority's board of trustees, succeeding John Myers, who recently resigned.

An award-winning architect, Volpe is founding principal and president of City Architecture, which emphasizes urban planning, public architecture and urban redevelopment.

"This is a great privilege," said Volpe in a prepared statement. "Public transportation is critical to the revitalization and long-term health of Cleveland and our region. I am very enthusiastic about helping to integrate public transit into the lives of Greater Clevelanders."

No stranger to community involvement, Volpe served as Cleveland’s commissioner of architecture from 1983 to 1989, where he helped plan and design more than $150 million in municipal projects. Currently, Volpe is a member of Cleveland Landmarks Commission, Midtown Cleveland, Leadership Cleveland, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Downtown Cleveland Partnership and Cleveland Restoration Society, as well as other groups.

He is expected to be sworn in at the board’s Feb. 27 meeting.
