Train Control: Alcatel nets NYCTA pact

Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York (NYCTA) has awarded Alcatel Transport Automation Systems a $13 million contract to adapt its train-control technology for use on the 700-mile subway, which is trying to establish a communications-based train control (CBTC) standard.

Alcatel’s charge over the next five years is to develop an "operating proof" of the interoperability specification among a variety of wayside and on-board systems, according to an Alcatel statement. Matra Transport/Siemens Transportation Systems Inc. will supply the radio/RF subsystem.

In December 1999, NYCTA gave Matra/Siemens the go-ahead to resignal its Carnasie line and equip 160 subway cars to operate under CBTC.
