Coming soon: Moving pictures in MARTA tunnels

Everything old is new again — including old flip-book-type moving pictures, coming to a transit agency near you.

Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Jan. 24 announced plans to launch motion picture in-tunnel advertising.

Submedia, the company that developed the technology, would mount its proprietary projection system on the subway tunnel walls, transforming static signs into a 20-second "movie" outside the train’s windows.

"It’s a simple new twist on a century-old idea," said Joshua Spodek, Submedia chief executive officer, in a prepared statement. "Traditional movies project moving film to stationary viewers. In our system, the viewers move and the film stays still."

The initial 900-foot display would be installed between Sandy Spring and Dunwoody stations this spring for a six-month demonstration period. Afterward, additional locations may be considered.
