Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Nov. 1 revised its Guaranteed Parking Program, limiting reservation time for some commuters, opening space for others.


Now called Reserved Parking, the program would reserve permit-holders' parking spaces only until 10 a.m., after which all unused spaces would become available to general parking customers. Permit-holder reserved parking would be in effect weekdays, except holidays.


"We recognize that parking availability is an important issue for our customers, especially as more customers now are riding our trains earlier during morning rush hour," said Denton Kent, WMATA director of property development and management in a prepared statement.


The program change is designed to create a balance between commuters who arrive early and those that arrive in late morning.


WMATA's Guaranteed Parking Program — started in 1997 as a one-year pilot but fully implemented in fall 1998 — allowed parking to customers who were unable to arrive at station parking lots before all available park-and-ride spaces were filled.
