NJ Transit awards contract for Morrisville Yard

New Jersey Transit’s board Nov. 8 awarded M-Track Enterprises/L.K. Comstock Inc. joint venture a contract to construct the $32 million Morrisville Train Yard, in Falls Township, Pa., south of Trenton Station.

Transit agency officials hope to eliminate a bottleneck north of the station where the passenger trains currently must slow down and cross up to four sets of tracks. When complete, NJ Transit trains would leave Trenton Station and continue south, then reverse either that day or the next for their return trip to New York.

Under contract terms, the New York-based joint venture would build a train storage yard, an office and crew building, and an equipment service and inspection facility. The former-Conrail yard would accommodate up to 12 10-car trains for overnight storage; future expansion could create enough room for up to 240 rail cars.

New Jersey’s Transportation Trust Fund and federal dollars have been allocated to fund the project, which is scheduled to begin in January.
