Hertz, BART begin car-sharing program

Bay Area Rapid Transit and Hertz Corp. Oct. 11 plan to inaugurate a station car program at BART’s Fremont Station.

Some participants would drive a Hertz car from their home to Fremont Station, then board trains for the next leg of their journeys. Others, having completed the BART portion of their commutes, would drive the cars from the station to work.

"The concept is that it provides another option for accessing the station and getting two people to use one car," says BART spokesman, Mike Healy.

Fremont Station was chosen as the pilot-program location because of its proximity to Silicon Valley — about seven to 10 miles. If BART and Hertz officials decide after about a year that the program is successful, they may expand the service to other stations.
