On Sept. 18, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Transportation Mortimer Downey announced a $3.5 million Federal Transit Administration grant award to New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority to rehabilitate 72nd Street Station.

Project plans include a new control house, stairs, elevators to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act, a park, pedestrian mall and sidewalks.

Completion is slated for December 2002, after which the existing control house would be used as a part-time entrance and the new control house would serve as the station’s main entrance.
