Athens Piraeus Electric Railways AG on Aug. 31 received the first two of 40 three-section metro trains as part of its contract with a consortium of Hellenic Shipyards (HSY), Adtranz and Siemens Verkehrstechnik.

Under contract terms, consortium leader HSY is building the carbodies and is responsible for interior finishing work. Adtranz is supplying mechanical and electrical components, and bogies. Siemens is providing traction and train control systems.

The contract calls for a total of 40 trains for use on an underground line from Piraeus, in southern Athens, to Kifissia, north of the capitol city. The line would link a number of planned for the 2004 Olympic Games events.
