New Jersey: Station under way in Union Township

New Jersey Transit broke ground on its $29.8 million Union Township rail station Aug. 15. Officials expect the station, near Kent University, will attract 800 daily riders — about half of whom would be new to public transportation.

Plans include a 545-foot high-level, center platform; a 3,000-square foot station building with restrooms and up to three vendors; and a 484-space parking lot with a "kiss-and-ride" area for drop-offs.

Preliminary work began in April and the station is expected to upon in early 2002, at which time new tracks will have been constructed for freight trains, and existing tracks and signal and communications systems will have been realigned.
