Rail News: Passenger Rail

Alaska Railroad tests Colorado Railcar's DMU

In early August, Alaska Railroad Corp. (ARRC) is testing Colorado Railcar’s Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU).

The self-propelled passenger car features push-pull technology, enabling a train to reverse direction quickly — an important factor in shuttle- and commuter-rail operations, according to a prepared statement.

The DMU equipment also is designed to be fuel efficient and environmentally friendly, and meet federal safety standards for passenger operations on freight railroads.

ARRC is exploring DMU vehicles as an option because the railroad expects to expand passenger services and find ways to use the new airport station, AKRR officials said.
