Utah Transit Authority (UTA) recently contracted Commuter Rail Constructors (CRC) to act as construction manager and general contractor for a commuter-rail line between Weber County and Salt Lake City.

A joint venture of Stacy and Witbeck Inc. and Herzog Contracting Corp., CRC will be responsible for managing subcontracts and performing most of the construction work.

The contract’s $525,000 first phase includes developing a cost-effective construction plan. Involving the contractor in the project’s early phases enables CRC to work with the designer during the design process, according to a prepared statement.

The contract requires CTC to generate a guaranteed maximum project cost to expedite funding approval from Federal Transit Administration. UTA plans to open the line in 2007.

Meanwhile, the authority also elected Joe Cannon and DeMar Mitchell board members. Chairman for Geneva Steel and the Utah State Republican Party, Cannon also is a member of the Republican National Committee, and board member of the Desert Morning News Publishing Co., Eagle Publishing, International Iron and Steel Institute, and Climate Institute.

Former mayor of Clinton, Utah, Mitchell previously served as a member of the Wasatch Front Regional Council, Utah Transportation Commission and Envision Utah’s Study Organization, and chaired the Utah State Economic Development Board.
