Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) recently opened a new Blue Line station at Logan International Airport.
Located about 500 feet east of the previous station, the $23 million facility features wider escalators and elevators to accommodate luggage. The ADA-compliant station also contains longer platforms to accommodate six-car trains, turnstiles with adjacent luggage slides and monitors with flight information.
Construction on the project began in April 2000. The station is part of MBTA’s $740 million project designed to update the six-mile Blue Line’s stations and rolling stock.
The authority also recently budgeted $1.6 million for the $3.7 million Gloucester commuter-rail station rehabilitation, which includes adding 100 parking spaces adjacent to Railroad Avenue; upgrading LED signage to indicate train arrivals; adding new lighting and signage; improving sidewalks and landscaping; and enhancing vehicular and pedestrian access.
Located on MBTA’s Rockport Line, the station serves about 550 daily riders.
