Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corp. (Metra) recently broke ground on a new station at the Palos Park stop on the SouthWest Service Line.

The project includes building a new 1,800-square-foot depot with a waiting area and 800-foot-long platforms. The station will feature a portico roof for additional outside waiting space, new lighting, sidewalks and a commuter drop-off area. The current station features a windbreak shelter on the platform.

Metra also is adding 180 parking spaces, bringing the station’s total number of parking spots to more than 400.

Serveing about 200 weekday commuters, the station is part of a $198 million plan to upgrade and expand the line’s service.
