New Web site tells commuters how to cut transportation costs

Many commuters who use public transit might not know they can set aside $105 per month in pre-tax dollars to help cover their transportation costs. TaxFreeTransit.org has joined the World Wide Web to teach commuters how to save money on transit-rail, bus and vanpool rides.

Launched yesterday, the Web site provides information on Section 132 of the Internal Revenue Code, which enables workers to allocate pre-tax earnings to certain commuting costs by using transportation flexible spending accounts (FSA).

TaxFreeTransit.org also provides free documents for human resources departments to initiate company-wide transportation FSAs; a Section 132 fact sheet; a link for transit agencies to order a free media tool kit on Section 132 benefits; and a calculator to determine savings from FSAs.
