Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) riders are paying more to hop a train, but they’ll have more trains to board next month.

On July 1, the agency implemented a 7.5 percent fare increase. Base one-way tickets went up from $3 to $3.25 and fares for trains originating in Stockton, Calif., rose 9 percent. ACE also revised its discounted fare program for seniors, children and passengers with disabilities, and now offers a 50 percent discount off regular ticket prices.

Beginning Aug. 28, ACE will add a fourth round-trip train between Stockton and San Jose. The train will depart Stockton Monday through Friday at 9:30 a.m. and arrive in San Jose at 11:40 a.m.; then leave San Jose at 12:05 p.m. and arrive in Stockton at 2:15 p.m.

The additional service will be funded by the California Department of Transportation, which is seeking to reduce congestion along Interstate 205 during a three-year construction project, and Amtrak, whose passengers can use the train to connect to the national intercity passenger railroad’s San Joaquin line.
