South Florida RTA completes New River Bridge

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) recently opened the $78 million New River Bridge. The agency will use the structure to operate more Tri-Rail trains on weekdays, increasing service from 40 to 50 trains.

The four-and-a-half year project included building a two-mile bridge between Tri-Rail’s Fort Lauderdale Station and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport Station at Dania Beach.

Trains previously crossed the river on a bascule bridge, which was raised and lowered to accommodate boat traffic. Due to a large volume of boats, which have priority over rail traffic, SFRTA could not have operated trains over the bascule bridge at the 20- and 30-minute headways it now offers.
