Rail News: Passenger Rail

Staten Island Railway obtains four new locomotives

MTA New York City Transit's Staten Island Railway recently took delivery of four low-emission diesel locomotives from Brookville Equipment Corp.

The motive power will replace four older, second-hand locomotives, two of which date back to the 1940s and two were built in 1968. The new locomotives will be used to support maintenance-of-way work, such as maintaining tracks, right of way and structures; propelling work equipment that steam-cleans running rails; and applying traction-enhancing gel. The units also could be used to haul passenger cars in the event of a third-rail outage and to clear snow from tracks.

The locomotives cost $1.6 million each and were part of a combined 16-unit order with MTA Metro-North Railroad and the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
