With last year's record-high gas prices, it's no surprise that public transit ridership soared in 2008. Agencies collectively posted 10.7 billion trips, the highest level in 52 years, according to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). Ridership rose 4 percent compared with 2007's total.

Light-, commuter- and heavy-rail ridership rose 8.3 percent, 4.7 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively.
