Yesterday, House Transportation Committee Chairman James Oberstar (D-Minn.), Federal Transit Administration Acting Deputy Administrator Matthew Welbes and U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) unveiled a report showcasing a "new generation of innovative transit systems," according to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).

"Reinventing Transit: American Communities Finding Smarter, Cleaner, Faster Transportation Solutions" cites transit innovations in 45 areas in 30 states that are creating jobs, cutting traffic congestion, and reducing air pollution and global warming. The report also includes case studies featuring more than a dozen transit innovations.

The report is timely since the six-year federal transportation bill expires Sept. 30, said EDF, a non-profit organization that partners with businesses, governments and communities to "find practical environmental solutions," according to the firm.

"'Reinventing Transit' makes the case that reinventing the transportation bill to fund transit innovations ... will deliver new jobs, new connections to jobs and economic development for communities of all sizes," Oberstar said in a prepared statement. "Given our economic and environmental challenges, 'business as usual' transportation investments are not good enough."
