The Russian Railways' new Sapsan high-speed electric train recently set a speed record of 175 mph — the fastest a train has ever run in the country and more than 10 percent faster than the train's top operating speed, according to the railway.

The train set the record on a stretch of track between Okulovka and Mstinskiy.

The railway continues to test the Siemens-manufactured train, which will run along a 400-mile line between Moscow and St. Petersburg at speeds up to 125 mph. Once the Russian Railways modernizes its infrastructure, the top speed could increase to 143 mph.

The railway will continue to conduct train trials until November. In late 2009, the Sapsan train will make its first regular trip along the route. The train is expected to make the trip in about three hours and 45 minutes.
