The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) board recently approved a series of fare increases set to take effect on Sept. 14, coinciding with the opening of the new Green Line.

DART will raise single-ride fares from $1.50 to $1.75; local day passes, from $3 to $4; and commuter rail one-zone tickets, from $3 to $5. The agency also will replace the single ride premium pass with a zoned commuter-rail and express bus pass ranging in price from $2.50 to $3.75, depending on trip distance.

The ticket price hike will generate about $11 million in additional revenue, which will help DART cover higher operating costs and continue its light-rail expansion program.

Also on Sept. 14, the agency will launch rail service on the first phase of the $1.8 billion Green Line, between Pearl Station on the east side of downtown Dallas and Deep Ellum Station, Baylor University Medical Center Station, Fair Park Station and MLK Station. In December 2010, DART plans to open the remaining 25 miles of the Green Line, which will extend southeast to Pleasant Grove and northwest from Victory Station to the Dallas Market Center, Southwestern Medical District, Love Field Airport, and downtown Farmers Branch and Carrollton.
