World-renowned architect, artist and engineer Santiago Calatrava has unveiled his final design for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub.

The design features an image of a bird being released from a child's hand to symbolize renewal and hope. The glass and steel structure will be supported by "columns of light," according to Calatrava. The facility's roof will feature an operable skylight located along the central axis; on warm spring and summer days, as well as Sept. 11 each year, the skylight will be opened.

In 2003, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey contracted Downtown Design Partnership — a joint venture comprising DMJM + Harris, STV Group Inc. and Parsons Transportation, in association with Santiago Calatrava S.A. — to design the new transportation hub to replace the one destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
