The Port Authority of Allegheny County recently announced it cut the cost of its North Shore Connector project by $14 million.

The cost of the light-rail extension will decrease from $552.8 million to $538.8 million, due to a "favorable round of construction bids and management efforts to contain contract expenses," according to the agency.

The authority's board also approved contracts to complete work on the new stations that are part of the extension. The agency is continuing to seek funds to complete the project, which is scheduled to be finished in 2011.

The North Shore Connector is a 1.2-mile light-rail extension under the Allegheny River to Pittsburgh's North Shore.
