The recession and high unemployment rate continues to affect ridership on California intercity passenger-rail routes, according to the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority.

In May, ridership on the Auburn-to-San Jose Capitol Corridor plummeted 13.1 percent to 136,716 passengers. However, the figure was compared against ridership in May 2008, when the corridor carried its second-highest passenger count in history, according to the authority. For FY2009's first eight months, ridership dipped 0.8 percent.

On the San Diego-to-San Luis Obispo Pacific Surfliner, May ridership dropped 9.6 percent to 237,018. Fiscal year-to-date ridership dropped 7.3 percent.

Finally, May ridership on the Oakland-Sacramento-Bakersfield San Joaquins service dipped 7.6 percent to 84,906. However, ridership rose 4.3 percent during FY2009's first eight months.
