• Wabtec Corp.’s MotivePower subsidiary received a $44 million order to supply 12 MPXpress® commuter locomotives to Virginia Railway Express (VRE). Delivery will begin in the summer of 2010. The locomotives will be manufactured in Boise, Idaho, with deliveries scheduled to begin in summer 2010. VRE has an option to acquire an additional eight locomotives, which would bring the total order value to more than $73 million.

• Railinc Corp. is launching a Web-based “business intelligence service” that features Teradata Corp.’s Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance, according to a statement. Railinc is implementing the “data warehouse appliance” in order to create an information portal for railroads, rail-car and equipment owners, shippers and other members of the North American rail industry. Initially, the new service will “bring better visibility of rail assets and maintenance costs, and ease waybill management,” the companies said.

• Interfleet Technology recently completed the first phase of its passenger train design project for the Saudi Railway Co. (SAR). Interfleet has been working with SAR to develop conceptual designs for a fleet of new diesel passenger trainsets to operate on the North-South Railway, which is under construction. The designs, which Interfleet said have been “well received” by SAR and the Railway Technical Review Committee, were developed for three service classes: executive, business and economy, as well as for restaurant vehicles and sleeper coaches.

• Kelso Technologies Inc. has shipped its first order for pressure relief valves from its new assembly facility near Houston. AVS Tank Car Valve Services assembles, tests and ships Kelso pressure relief valves to the North American tank car market. The initial shipment represents “a standing order resulting from the second major purchase order for an additional 100 valves” from a chemical company customer; there are 70 valves remaining to be shipped and more are scheduled for delivery this month, according to a prepared statement. The order is the second installment of a 450-car project. When completed, it’ll be Kelso’s largest pressure relief valve retrofit to date, the company said.

• To accommodate “phenonmenal growth,” PowerRail Distribution Inc. recently broke ground on a 6,000-square-foot corporate office building in Duryea, Pa., that is about double the company’s current space, according to a prepared statement. The building will feature expanded communications, computer and Web infrastructure capabilities, and incorporate energy-saving fluorescent and LED light fixtures, the company said. It’ll also be built to incorporate alternative energy solutions, including a water conservation system. The project is scheduled to be completed by fall.
