Sacramento agency closes budget shortfall without making more service cuts

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) won’t have to cut more rail and bus service in January 2010 after all. The agency has identified additional internal cost savings that will help make up a $2.4 million budget shortfall without additional service reductions in the next fiscal year.

SacRT management staff recently determined the agency could carry over $2.2 million from the fiscal-year 2009 reserve for public liability, property damage and workers’ compensation claims. The savings resulted from the recent resolution of claims at a lower-than-anticipated rate, SacRT officials said in a prepared statement. Combined with other cost-cutting measures and additional revenue totaling  $383,000, the $2.2 million will offset the budget gap.
