Sound Transit opens bids for University Link tunnel boring work

advertisement

Earlier this week, Sound Transit opened bids for tunnel boring work associated with the $1.9 billion University Link extension.

The lowest bid of $153.6 million submitted by JCM U-Link Joint Venture was $20.7 million, or 12 percent, below an engineer’s estimate. The joint venture comprises Jay Dee Contractors, Frank Collucio Construction Co. and Michaels Corp.

The second-lowest bid of $154.1 million was submitted by a Kenny Construction/J.F. Shea Construction Co. joint venture. Sound Transit’s board will review the lowest bid this fall.

To begin next year, the work calls for boring light-rail tunnels connecting Capitol Hill and the existing downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel.

University Link, which will be built underground, is expected to open in 2016. Some construction is currently under way at several underground station locations.
