Yesterday, Balfour Beatty plc announced it reached an agreement to acquire Parsons Brinckerhoff for $626 million. The deal is contingent on shareholder approval at both organizations.

An engineering and consulting firm, Parsons Brinckerhoff operates more than 100 offices and employs 12,650 workers worldwide.

The combination of the complementary businesses, both in terms of geography and market-sector expertise, will help Balfour Beatty establish a “worldwide professional services business” and enhance global reach,” as well as foster a “leading position in U.S. civil infrastructure,” particularly in the transportation market, Balfour Beatty officials said in a prepared statement.

“In particular, we believe [the deal] makes us one of the world’s major players in professional services, substantially strengthening our U.S. presence, while complementing our current U.S. business,” said Balfour Beatty Chief Executive Officer Ian Tyler.

Balfour Beatty’s U.S. subsidiaries include Balfour Beatty Construction, Heery International, Balfour Beatty Infrastructure and Balfour Beatty Rail.
