Since February, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has “jump-started” more than 10,041 transportation projects nationwide by allocating stimulus dollars, the Obama Administration announced yesterday.
Of $48.1 billion available in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act dollars for highway, road, rail, transit, bridge and airport projects, the USDOT has obligated $30.6 billion for the 10,041 projects approved in 53 states and territories, and 6,547 of those projects are under way. The Federal Transit Administration has awarded $7.4 billion to state and local transit agencies for new vehicles, facility renovations and maintenance, and the Federal Railroad Administration has approved 93 percent of the funding available under the Amtrak Capital Grants program.
Many of the projects “would have been stalled or shelved altogether without Recovery Act dollars,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in a prepared statement.
