• Edmonton Transit awarded Advanced Rail Management Corp. (ARM) a contract to manage rail grinding operations on its 12.6-mile route. ARM’s responsibilities include conducting pre-grind inspections and analyses; developing an optimized grinding plan; planning and overseeing all contracted operations; and analyzing post-grind track conditions. The annual contract specifies that the rail grinding equipment used must be able to “measure and record targeted vs. actual rail profile, as well as corrugation depth and wavelength in real time,” according to a statement issued by ARM, which has been involved with Edmonton Transit’s rail grinding program since 1990.

• Rhein Main Services, on behalf of the Transit Authority Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV), selected Cubic Deutschland to develop the initial stage and central core of Germany’s first large-scale electronic ticketing system, according to a Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. statement. Cubic will develop an integrated back-office computer system, provide point-of-sale terminals and operate the system for three years. The RMV and its partners operate more than 3,300 buses, and 600 rail and tram stations.

• DRI Corp.’s Sweden-based Mobitec AB subsidiary — through its Mobitec Brazil Ltda (Mobitec Brazil) business unit in Brazil — recently received an order for the company’s electronic information display system (EIDS) products from Bombardier Inc. The units will be installed on about 50 light-rail cars serving a rail system in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The order marks Mobitec’s entry into the Brazilian market. “We foresee good demand for rail cars in Brazil, particularly as the region invests in transit infrastructure in preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup™ in 2014 and the [Olympic] Games in 2016,” said DRI Chairman, President and CEO David Turney in a prepared statement.

• Yesterday, Freightliner Group Ltd. officially launched the first two PowerHaul® locomotives at a ceremony held at Freightliner’s depot near Leeds, U.K. Manufactured by  GE Transportation, the PowerHaul is designed to generate more horsepower and tractive effort, use less fuel and produce fewer greenhouse-gas emissions than locomotives currently in use, according to GE.
