TriMet's monthly trips climb for first time since February 2009

For the first time in a year, the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) posted a monthly ridership gain. In February, systemwide ridership increased 1.4 percent to 7.9 million trips compared with trips taken in February 2009, when TriMet last registered a monthly ridership spike.

Weekly trips rose 1.4 percent to just under 2 million, weekday trips increased 0.9 percent to 323,300, weekend trips dropped 3.5 percent to 325,500 and rush-hour trips declined 2.7 percent to 102,400.

On MAX light-rail lines, weekly trips rose 18.9 percent to 754,300, weekday trips climbed 18.1 percent to 119,800, weekend trips jumped 21.9 percent to 155,300 and rush-hour trips increased 12.3 percent to 35,500 compared with February 2009 figures. MAX Green Line weekday trips averaged 19,100 and weekend trips averaged 24,500.

On the WES commuter-rail line, weekly trips increased 0.8 percent to 6,300 and weekday/rush-hour trips increased 0.8 percent to 1,260.
