Updates from Skanska, HDR, Portec Rail Products and Railinc; Also, in memoriam: Safetran Systems' Pierce and Gannett Fleming's DeVito

• Skanska, in a joint venture with Granite Construction, has received a contract from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to construct the new PATH station at the site of the World Trade Center in New York City. Skanska’s share of the contract is 80 percent, totaling $434 million. The partnership will be responsible for placing all cast-in-place concrete to construct the new station platforms. The contract includes completion of the east/west connector and West Street underpass, and connecting the station to the World Financial Center. All self-performed civil work for the contract will be done in conjunction with Granite Construction and Skanska will perform all mechanical/electrical/plumbing work and architectural finishes. Work on the project will begin this month and completion is expected in May 2014.

• HDR has been awarded a five-year contract from Sound Transit for on-call right-of-way services. The ROW services include planning, acquisition, relocation and property management and transit support necessary for the construction and operation of additional light-rail and commuter-rail systems in the Seattle area.

• Portec Rail Products reported unaudited fourth-quarter 2009 net income of $1.4 million or 15 cents per share and unaudited net income of $6.8 million, or 71 cents per share, for the year ended Dec. 31, 2009. This compares to unaudited net income of $1.5 million, or 16 cents per share, for fourth-quarter 2008 and unaudited net income $7.8 million, or 81 cents per share, for 2008.

• Railinc has successfully completed its sixth consecutive Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) 70 Type II examination. The examination assessed Railinc’s business processes, IT systems and internal controls from Oct. 1, 2008, through Sept. 30, 2009. Railinc also announced that President and Chief Executive Officer E. Allen West has been chosen to serve on the North Carolina Technology Association’s board for 2010.

• Safetran Systems Corp. announced that retired Vice President of Sales Phil Pierce died March 11 in Minnesota. He was 75. Pierce was a member of the High Speed Rail Association, Railway Systems Suppliers, Inc., Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association, and American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association.

• Gannett Fleming’s Bruce DeVito died on March 2 after a lengthy illness, according to the engineering firm. Based out of the firm’s New York office, DeVito served as vice president and regional director of rail and transit services.
