Yesterday, Austin’s Capital Metropolitan Transit Authority launched MetroRail, the first modern passenger-rail system in central Texas.
Capital MetroRail’s Red Line provides commuter service from Leander to downtown Austin. MetroRail will offer nine morning trips and 10 afternoon trips. During the first week, MetroRail will be offering free rides.
MetroRail is part of the All Systems Go Long-Range Transit Plan, which includes expanded bus service, and new and improved park-and-ride lots.
“Austin is a world-class city, but traffic threatens our quality of life. MetroRail is part of our region’s solution to protect our quality of life,” said Austin Mayor Pro Tem and Capital Metro Chairman Mike Martinez in a prepared statement.
