Caltrain one step away from adopting electrification program

On Thursday, Caltrain’s board will determine whether to certify a final environmental report for an electrification program.

The board’s vote would complete the environmental process and enable the railroad to adopt the program, and seek federal and state funding, according to Caltrain.

The railroad plans to electrify its system from a San Francisco station to Tamien Station in San Jose, Calif. The program calls for converting rolling stock from diesel locomotive-powered cars to electric multiple units.

An electrified system would reduce noise and air pollution, Caltrain officials said in a prepared statement. A recent environmental assessment concluded that the system would cut air emissions by 90 percent.
