Yesterday, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) heightened security throughout its system in response to several bombings in Moscow subway stations.

Metro transit police explosive detection teams conducted random station and rail yard sweeps, and transit police officers stepped up patrols.

“We will remain on a heightened state of security at least through the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit scheduled in Washington in a few weeks, and we are partnering with federal and local law enforcement for security related to that summit,” said Metro Transit Police Acting Chief Jeri Lee in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) also increased security because of the subway bombings, including the deployment of additional K9 patrol and detection teams.

“L.A. sheriffs will be adjusting schedules and shifts to provide added coverage as long as necessary to ensure the safety of the Metro system,” LACMTA officials said.

In addition, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority heightened security in MTA New York City Transit subways, and transit agencies in other major cities employed more police forces and stepped up patrols.
