Yesterday, VIA Rail Canada Inc. announced the Canadian government will help fund a program aimed at modernizing and upgrading six self-propelled diesel rail cars.

Industrial Rail Services Inc. obtained a $12.6 million contract funded by the government to rebuild the cars, which will be used by VIA Rail between Sudbury and White River, Ontario, and between Victoria and Courtenay, British Columbia.

Built in the 1950s, the stainless-steel cars will feature new interiors; improved accessibility; LED interior lighting; new controls, electrical wiring and HVAC systems; and rebuilt diesel engines and air brakes.

The first of the rebuilt cars are scheduled to be delivered in April 2011, with the remaining five to be delivered by 2011’s end. The project is part of the government’s $923 million investment in passenger-rail modernization and expansion projects.
