LACMTA considers light-rail extension

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) is considering whether to extend rail service farther into the South Bay to improve mobility in southwest Los Angeles County.

Beginning April 26, the authority will hold four public meetings as the first step in the environmental review process for the project. LACMTA is currently preparing a Draft Environmental Impact Statement/Environmental Impact Report to identify transit improvements that would provide an alternative to the Interstate 405 corridor.

Two potential plans are currently being considered: a light-rail alternative under which LACMTA’s Green Line would be extended from the Redondo Beach station, where it currently ends, to the proposed Torrance Regional Transit Center; and a freight-rail line alternative under which LACMTA would operate passenger cars on the Harbor Subdivision right of way using upgraded rail tracks from the El Segundo/LAX area to the proposed Torrance Regional Transit Center.
