Virginia Railway Express (VRE) officials have asked Amtrak to continue operating its commuter-rail service for at least several weeks beyond a scheduled contract termination date because Keolis Rail Services will not be ready to assume operations by a contractual start date of June 28, Amtrak officials said in a prepared statement.
Although Amtrak wants to help VRE, the agency should re-bid the contract if Keolis can't meet its contractual obligations, said Amtrak President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Boardman.
VRE contracted Keolis as its service provider in October 2009.
