• LTK Engineering Services was contracted by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to provide technical services for the Metrorail car fleet, including procurement support for the 7000-Series rail cars. Services could include specification development, design and design review, manufacturing inspection, engineering analysis and assessment of technical issues, and support in all aspects of rail-car procurement, rehabilitation, repair and maintenance.

• New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and New Jersey Transit have partnered with MasterCard Worldwide to launch a six-month pilot program through which MasterCard PayPass will be accepted for fare payments on select train and bus routes. The program enables riders of the three transit systems to purchase fares and transfer between transit systems by tapping a single type of contactless credit or debit card or device.

• RailComm will provide a wireless remote-control derail system at Amtrak’s maintenance facility in Los Angeles. Two customized local control panels, located within the maintenance building, will provide wireless remote control to the derails.

• Engineering firm Alfred Benesch & Co. announced it will merge with HWS Consulting Group. Uniting the firms’ respective practice areas will broaden the services the combined company can offer, Benesch officials said in a prepared statement.

• Parsons Brinckerhoff has named Will Willson a risk manager with the engineering firm’s geotechnical and tunneling technical excellence center in Princeton, N.J. He will be responsible for risk assessments, risk analysis and risk management for infrastructure projects worldwide. Willson previously was an associate principal with Davis Langdon. Parsons Brinckerhoff also named Neil Lucey senior vice president in the New York office. He will serve as area manager responsible for client management and project performance of all New York operations. Previously, Lucey served as senior vice president for a consulting engineering company.

• Bombardier announced first-quarter revenue of $4.2 billion vs. $4.5 billion in Q1 2009. Net income totaled $153 million compared with $158 million in first-quarter FY2009. Bombardier Transportation’s revenue totaled $2.3 billion, about even with last year’s figure. Order backlog reached a value of $27.1 billion and the company reported new orders worth $2.9 billion.

• ALK Technologies Inc. released an upgraded version of PC*Miler 24, a routing, mileage and mapping software program. The software features a least cost routing feature to generate routes based on custom fuel efficiency settings and a greenhouse-gas emissions estimator.
