Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced it awarded $293 million for “major transit improvements," including new streetcars, transit facilities and buses.

The monies will be distributed through two programs, the Urban Circulator Grant Program and Bus and Bus Livability Grant Program. The Urban Circulator Grant Program will provide $130 million to fund six new streetcar and bus rapid transit projects.

The six transit systems slated to receive streetcar funds are located in Dallas and Ft. Worth, Texas; Chicago; St. Louis; Charlotte, N.C.; and Cincinnati.

Among the projects, Dallas Area Rapid Transit will receive $4.9 million to create a new streetcar connector between uptown and downtown Dallas.
