The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) plans to modernize the platform-to-mezzanine and mezzanine-to-Union Station level elevators inside the Union Station Metrorail station beginning Aug. 31.

The 12-week project will include replacing a majority of the mechanical components and the elevator cab equipment to ensure safety and reliability, and extend the life of the elevators, WMATA officials said in a prepared statement.

The elevator modernization is one of several projects included in the $177 million Red Line rehabilitation program, which is expected to be completed by summer 2013.
