• Sumitomo Corp. of America, in conjunction with partner Nippon Sharyo Ltd., was awarded a $560 million contract to supply 160 bi-level electric passenger rail cars to Metra. The cars will be similar to the 26 Gallery-type bi-level electric cars that were delivered in 2005-06 and will accommodate up to 140 passengers. The cars will replace older fleets, which have been in use since the 1970s. Delivery is scheduled to begin in late 2012 and be completed by mid-2015.

• Railinc announced that its RailSight car location message system for real-time track and trace of rail freight now offers secure, on-demand tracing through its web tool, RailSight Online. The expanded integration options provide equipment owners, shippers, third-part logistics companies and transportation management software providers improved ability to manage their rail equipment and shipment data, according to a press release.

• Thales has been awarded a contract to provide a European Train Control System Level 1 for the Gyeongchun rail line, a 49.7-mile route between Mangwoo and Chuncheon, South Korea. The system is part of a project designed to upgrade a single-track line.

• Bombardier Transportation has selected Wind River VxWorks 61508 Platform and Wind River Linux for its latest standards-based train information system. The system will be used on the new Bombardier-built S-Stock trains that will run on London Underground’s subsurface lines.

• Kinkisharyo International L.L.C. announced it has developed a low-floor, dual-powered hybrid streetcar that has been specifically designed for the United States. The first LFX-300 Streetcar will be unveiled in the United States in November, the company said.

• Third-party logistics provider Kenco Logistic Services L.L.C. has been awarded a contract by American Standard Brands to manage and operate its newly-established Dallas-area distribution center.
