• Ansaldo STS Sweden AB received an $111.3 million contract from Greater Stockholm Public Transport to re-signal Stockholm Underground. The contract includes all onboard systems for 30 trains and a "total replacement" of the 25.4-mile, 36-station Red Line signaling system, and could be extended to cover additional trains and lines, according to a prepared statement. The project, which is slated for completion in 2014, includes an option to migrate to driverless operation.

• Bombardier Transportation delivered 14 BOMBARDIER INNOVIA APM 100 automated people mover (APM) vehicles to China's Guangzhou Metro Corp. (GMC) — the first APM to be "deployed in an urban environment" in China, according to a Bombardier prepared statement. The vehicles will operate on GMC's 2.5-mile system connecting Guangzhou City's central business district and the Tianhe business and trade area. Bombardier's Pittsburgh facility "designed and supplied" the APMs, as well as the BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 automatic control system. Bombardier also designed 14 guideway switches; "mechanical parts" were fabricated in China. GMC also supplied the power systems, communications and platform screen doors.

• Thales España won a contract to provide signaling at a new San Feliz station in Spain's León province. Terms weren't disclosed. The contract includes the supply, installation and commissioning of an electronic interlocking, audio-frequency track circuits, LED signals and electrical point drives.

• Nomad Digital was selected by Britain's Northern Rail to provide vehicle tracking capabilities to the railroad's Class 156 fleet. Northern Rail will use the supplier's R3200 router, which will provide GPS functionality and backhaul via 3G networks, according to a prepared statement.

• Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) named Jean Claude Aurel Jr. a senior principal technical specialist in the firm's Transit & Rail Systems unit. Aurel, who has more than 12 years of technical and safety management experience, will serve as project safety manager on the Eagle project for the Regional Transportation District of Denver, where PB is part of a team building three commuter-rail lines.

• The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted a "patent-pending" status to EI Systems for its web-based Rail Manager® service, which is designed to enable EI System clients to track the status and location of rail cars within industrial sites, and "gain web-based visibility" into rail yard operations, according to a prepared statement.
