The Toronto Transit Commission recently awarded a $279 million contract to an Aecon Group Inc.-led consortium to build the first leg of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway extension.

McNally Construction, Kiewit Construction and Aecon Constructors will build the 1.6-mile twin tunnel subway track from the north end of the existing Downsview Station to new Sheppard West and Finch West stations.

Aecon Buildings will construct a new Sheppard West station, a three-level, 110,000-square-foot facility that will serve both subway and GO Transit trains. The station will include access for existing and future facilities and development in the Keele industrial area, as well as Downsview Park.

Construction on the extension is scheduled to begin in December and be complete in April 2014.
