Last week, Infrastructure Ontario issued a request for qualifications on behalf of Toronto-area transportation agency Metrolinx to firms interested in to designing, building and financing a 1.8-mile rail spur to Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Scheduled to open in 2015, the Air Rail Link (ARL) would branch off from the GO Georgetown South Corridor and connect with Terminal 1 at the airport. The project also calls for building a new ARL passenger station at the airport. Metrolinx will own and operate the rail link.

The RFQ is the first step in a project team selection. Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx will evaluate the RFQ submissions and pre-qualify teams according to their design and construction experience, as well as necessary financial backing, according to a press release. In early 2011, the parties plan to issue a request for proposals to the short-listed teams.
