Last week, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and non-profit partner the Market Street Railway unveiled a rehabilitated historic streetcar and canopy at the Geneva Streetcar Yard.

Streetcar 1071 is the first of 16 President’s Conference Committee (PCC) streetcars that will be rehabbed under an $18.7 million contract with Brookville Equipment Corp. SFMTA purchased the streetcar, along with 10 others, in 2004 from New Jersey Transit. The vehicles originally were built between 1946 and 1948 for the Minneapolis-St. Paul transit system.

Brookville will rehab the remaining 15 PCCs during the next two years. The rehabilitation includes re-engineering the electrical and propulsion systems, inspecting current ancillary electrical systems and rewiring all lighting systems.

The project is part of a larger $31.5 million fleet expansion program that calls for overhauling 26 additional historic streetcars.

Meanwhile, Shimmick Construction Co. has completed the Geneva Streetcar Yard canopy, which will shelter the streetcars. The $11 million canopy covers six tracks, sheltering up to 24 vehicles.
