Jackson County, Mo., in coordination with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and Mid-America Regional Council, has received a $1.8 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration to study a regional transit system that might include commuter rail.

The funds will be used to study three corridors: Interstate 70 between Kansas City and Odessa; the Rock Island Railroad between downtown Kansas City and Pleasant Hill; and downtown Kansas City between the River market neighborhood and Union Station.

The grant will help spur efforts to make the region "more competitive, economically viable and environmentally friendly," Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders said in a prepared statement.

Jackson County received the third-largest grant in a competitive process in which the FTA awarded $25.7 million to communities in 15 states.
