Northern Indiana commuter district to install ticket vending machines

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) has announced that, as of March 4, Hammond and Gary Metro ticket agents will no longer sell tickets at windows. Instead, ticket vending machines at the locations will be available.
The action is one of many cost saving measures the district has implemented "in light of contract labor and health care increases and reductions in fare revenue," NICTD officials said in a prepared statement.
"We will continue monitoring passenger activity at the stations and make personnel adjustments as the economy and ridership improve," officials said.
