The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has proposed a $3.5 billion fiscal-year 2012 budget for infrastructure improvements as part of the first of a five-year transportation capital plan that Gov. Chris Christie announced in January.

The proposal, which outlines $2.3 billion in spending for NJDOT and $1.2 billion for New Jersey Transit, "reflects the governor’s commitment to improve the safety and functionality of a multi-modal transportation network that provides mobility for millions of New Jersey residents and visitors daily," NJDOT officials said in a prepared statement.

The proposal includes $162 million for NJDOT multi-modal programs, including rail. NJ Transit funding would cover track replacement projects; upgrades to signals, overhead power lines and electrical substations; and security and station improvements.
