Capitol Corridor’s ridership reached a new monthly record for the third consecutive month this year, increasing 10.6 percent in March to 148,198 riders compared with March 2010.

The ridership boost resulted in a 13 percent revenue increase to $2.2 million for the month, as well, Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) officials said in a prepared statement.

“The Capitol Corridor route continues to be third-busiest route in the country, with ridership at 1.65 million for the last 12 months,” CCJPA officials said.

They also noted that the California Department of Transportation recently applied for federal high-speed passenger intercity rail grants for three projects that would affect the Capitol Corridor, including a statewide rolling stock acquisition totaling 26 bi-level cars and four locomotives. Ten of those cars would run on the Capitol Corridor to accommodate ridership growth.

Also in March, Pacific Surfliner ridership rose 6 percent to 230,510 and San Joaquin ridership increased 5 percent to 84,210 vs. March 2010 levels.
